Moving Forward Together

Year 1 Autumn Term 2009

Welcome to the new school year and Y1.

I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. Your children are already settling in and beginning to follow the new routines. Our topics for the Autumn Term include ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Sound and Hearing in Science.’ How are our toys different to the past?’ in History and ‘Around our school’ in Geography. We will be asking the children to bring things in for display from time to time – please support the children if they ask you for objects or information. For History during the next few weeks it would be wonderful if parents or grandparents can send in any really ‘old’ toys they may have in the attic – for our class museum. We will of course take great care of them.  In Art, we will be looking at self portraits exploring different media – the children always enjoy this unit, particularly using the different mirrors! D & T next half of term will focus on ‘Moving Pictures’.

I have already sent home a letter explaining your child’s homework so I am sure you know they will receive Numeracy homework each week. Please ensure both books are returned each week ready for setting homework the following week. Please continue to fill in the home to school green books, share the reading books the children bring home and help them with the word sheets – just a few at a time! We do not expect the children to be able to read the books they bring home at this stage, although I am sure some will. All children should have their PE kit and a paint apron in school now please. Please remember earrings should not be worn on swimming and PE days (Mondays & Wednesdays). If anyone can spare time to help with changing children for swimming or reading, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Please contact me if you have any concerns. I look forward to an enjoyable and successful year with your children.
